Pattern of Carbapenemase Producing Pathogens of Khwaja Yunus Ali Medical College Hospital in 2017

Background: Carbapenems are a cornerstone in the treatment of bacterial infections. They are widely used as a last resort medication for treating infections of multidrug-resistant bacterial pathogens. However, rapid emergence of its resistance and extensive spread significantly limits the treatment options for life-threatening infections.

Objective: The aim of this study was to detect carbapenem resistant pathogens from the patient's clinical specimens of Khwaja Yunus Ali Medical College Hospital and control their infection by rational antimicrobial therapy that willhelp prevent their dissemination and save lives.

Methods: Clinical samples of hospitalized cross sectional group of patients in 2017 were studied. Carbapenemase production was phenotypically detected. The data of investigation results were collected, noted, and analyzed properly following the standard procedures and guidelines.

Results: Bacteriological cultural investigation of 2061 different clinical specimens yielded the growth of 892 (43.3%) pathogens.Out of theses pathogens, the identified carbapenemase producing bacteria were 35 (4%). The most predominant isolateswere S. aureus (48%)followed by E.coli (43%).

Conclusion: This study revealedthat carbapenemase producing pathogensalso spread to the hospitalof remote area in Bangladesh. Though the number found in this study was not too high but epidemiological monitoring of carbapenemase producing organisms is important in all health service centers to prevent their dissemination.

Keywords: Carbapenems, Antibiotic registance, Antibiotic susceptibility, E.coli, S. aureus.
